What you get, and why it is built this way
OttoLearn is a site of interactive courses. Its main course is Introduction to Probability and Statistics, at college level, in 21 lessons. Its lessons can be read today without an account. This page describes what the site does, for whom, and the reasoning behind each choice, so that you can judge before you use it.

For students
What a student can use right now with no account, and what the account features add.
See the student page →For teachers
The teacher workspace page by page, what exists today, and what is recorded about students.
See the teacher page →What we deliberately do not do
Two things a comparable site would do, and this one refuses.
-
No grades from practice or from AI
Practice is for making mistakes safely. The official result is entered by a teacher and by nobody and nothing else.
-
No leaderboards, rankings or streaks
Progress is not shown to other students and is measured against the material, not against classmates. We would sooner someone came back because it helped than because a counter would reset.
How a lesson is built
Every lesson is assembled from the same pieces, and each piece has a reason to be there.
-
Every lesson has the same ten parts
An introduction, what you need first, the concepts, worked examples, guided practice, practice on your own, a check of what you have mastered, a longer problem with two paths to choose from, optional challenges, and the solutions. Once you know one lesson, you know your way around all of them.
-
Each kind of box has one job
A definition, a short example, a common trap, a pause before a solution: each has its own look and one intended purpose, so a reader can tell at a glance what they are reading. Each lesson opens with what you will be able to do, and its mastery check ends by asking how sure you are.
-
The question type follows the skill
Telling two ideas apart is a multiple-choice question. A number is typed. A procedure is worked in steps. In one lesson so far its steps are put back in order, and in another two look-alike cases are compared side by side. A flawed solution is there to be diagnosed. The format is chosen by what a student has to be able to do, not for variety.
-
Common mistakes are named in advance
Each lesson points out the wrong ideas students most often arrive with, says why they are tempting, and corrects them: an error that has been named is easier to recognise when it comes back.
Accounts and privacy, plainly
-
Sign-in through Google or Microsoft
An account has no OttoLearn password to lose.
-
No advertising profiles, no selling of information
We do not track anyone for advertising: no behavioural advertising, no third-party advertising analytics, and we do not sell information.
-
Accounts and AI are still in a test environment
Accounts and the AI features remain in a test environment while a privacy impact assessment, a review required by Québec law, is completed. Reading the lessons needs neither.

What we do not claim
The choices described here draw on well-established ideas from learning science: recalling instead of rereading, spacing out returns, getting feedback straight away, explaining in your own words. We have not measured their effect on the results of students who use OttoLearn, and we promise no result.
